Space?Based Observational Constraints on NO 2 Air Pollution Inequality From Diesel Traffic in Major US Cities

چکیده
Air pollution disproportionately burdens communities of color and lower-income in US cities. We have generally lacked city-wide concentration measurements that resolve the steep spatiotemporal gradients primary pollutants required to describe intra-urban air inequality. Here, we use observations from recently launched TROPospheric Ozone Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite sensor physics-based oversampling nitrogen dioxide (NO2) disparities with race, ethnicity, income 52 cities (June 2018–February 2020). report average US-urban census tract-level NO2 inequalities 28 ± 2% (race-ethnicity combined), many populous experiencing even greater inequalities. Using inventories, find diesel traffic is dominant source disparities, a 62% reduction emissions would decrease race-ethnicity by 37%. add evidence TROPOMI resolves tract-scale differences using relationships urban segregation patterns spatial variability column-to-surface correlations.

Acute respiratory health effects of air pollution on children with asthma in US inner cities.
BACKGROUND Children with asthma in inner-city communities may be particularly vulnerable to adverse effects of air pollution because of their airways disease and exposure to relatively high levels of motor vehicle emissions. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between fluctuations in outdoor air pollution and asthma morbidity among inner-city children with asthma. METHODS We analyzed d...
متن کاملTeleworking Effect on Traffic and Air Pollution
Traffic congestion is one of the foremost problems confronted by the urban and suburban tenants of today. Traffic congestion increases vehicle emissions and degrades air quality. Urban planners and policy makers have consequently been always investigating choices to alleviate traffic congestion and to enhance air quality. Teleworking is one option that has received significant consideration and...
متن کاملSeasonal analyses of air pollution and mortality in 100 US cities.
Time series models relating short-term changes in air pollution levels to daily mortality counts typically assume that the effects of air pollution on the log relative rate of mortality do not vary with time. However, these short-term effects might plausibly vary by season. Changes in the sources of air pollution and meteorology can result in changes in characteristics of the air pollution mixt...
متن کاملAir Pollution Estimation from Traffic Flows in Tehran Highways
Urban areas confront with increases in air pollution because of increasing urbanization, expanding the use of vehicles and development of economic activities. In this research carbon monoxide concentration as a pollutant analyzed and modeled within highways in Tehran. In this regards factors affecting the concentration of atmospheric pollutants analyzed on the basis of geometric, atmospheric an...
متن کاملAir Pollution in Major Chinese Cities: Some Progress, But Much More to Do
BACKGROUND Ambient (outdoor) air pollution has been implicated as a major cause of acute cardiovascular and pulmonary illnesses and increased risk for acute and chronic effects after chronic exposures, including mortality and morbidity. In 2008, due to persistent health concerns about its workforce and their dependents, the US Mission in China began monitoring air quality at the US Embassy in B...
